The organization was founded by a group of interested citizens seeking services and support for adults with disabilities. The only existing service for people with intellectual disabilities was the Special Education Program in the local school system.
The Arc of Fayette/Lamar Counties raised $15,000 and opened the Adult Work Activity Center on October 1, 1979. In March 1980, The ARC of Fayette/Lamar entered into a contract with the Alabama Department of Mental Health to provide supplemental funding to continue the operation of the program.
In January 2003 The Arc of Fayette and Lamar Counties agreed to provide residential and day services for Marengo County. Marengo County became officially incorporated with The Arc of The United States and The Arc of Alabama in 2006 and was renamed The Arc of Fayette, Lamar, and Marengo Counties Inc.
The Arc serves a diverse population which includes, but is not limited to adults and children with: intellectual and developmental disabilities, autism, head injuries, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, ADHD, hearing, and vision impairment.
